SA: Knife held to toddler's throat
ADELAIDE, Aug 21 AAP - Two men held a knife to a toddler's throat as they stole hismother's purse in what Adelaide police described as a shocking and frightening crime.
Police said a 20-year-old Ethiopian woman was pushing her 14-month-old son in a strolleralong Ashwin Parade at suburban Torrensville yesterday afternoon.
Two men of Sudanese appearance approached her, speaking to her in an Arabic languagewhich she understood.
"One of the males then produced a knife which was similar to a Swiss Army knife," actingDetective Chief Inspector Sid Thomas told reporters today.
"He placed that knife close to the throat of the child who was in the pusher. He demandedthat she hand over her purse otherwise he would harm the child."
The mother handed over her purse and then went to the house of a friend.
Police were not called for several hours as the mother and her friend did not speak English.
They contacted her husband, who came to the house and was told what had happened beforehe called police.
Speaking through an interpreter, the woman told reporters she felt her son's life wasin extreme danger.
"If it was just an adult, it would be different but a child was involved and that wasan awful thing to do," she said.
"I was scared for my child, very scared and I cried all the way back."
Insp Thomas said it was one of the most shocking crimes he had come in contact with.
He was confident the two men would soon be caught, as the woman had provided distinctivedescriptions of them and Adelaide's Sudanese community was small.
The man with the knife was described as aged about 30, 170cm tall, with a slim build, weighing about 70kg, wearing shorts, a light brown hooded jacket, which was zipped upto the top.
He had short, dark hair and was wearing a white earring in his left ear.
