Qld: Public meeting to send message to politicians
A community meeting will be held in Brisbane today to encourage those tired of being
ignored by politicians to make their voices heard.
Organisers, JustPeace, say the forum aims to get people campaigning on the issues that
concern them ahead of the federal election -- and to send a message to political leaders.
Former Brisbane lord mayor JIM SOORLEY will chair the meeting, with speakers including
indigenous artist KEV CARMODY, human rights advocate JULIAN BURNSIDE and Australian Council
of Social Services head MICHAEL RAPER.
Issues for discussion include the Free Trade Agreement with the United States, the
war in Iraq, Medicare, the environment, indigenous concerns and the detention of refugees.
The meeting will be held at Brisbane City Hall and starts at 6.45pm (AEST).
