Fed: Labor says CASA must look at safety, not profits

Labor says human safety -- rather than airline profits -- are paramount as the CivilAviation Safety Authority reviews aviation safety regulations.

Opposition transport spokesman MARTIN FERGUSON says Labor is wary about plans to shiftresponsibility for routine visual checks on passenger jets from engineers to pilots.

He says pilots and aircraft maintenance engineers are specialised professionals andtheir expertise and role in aviation safety must be respected.

Mr FERGUSON says the safety regulator must be vigilant in the current aviation competitionclimate where airlines are looking to cost cuts.

He says it's important CASA remembers its primary responsibility is for the safetyof the travelling public and flight crews, not airline profits.
